Inversion
Limited Supported Headstand
Sirsasana III
An advanced headstand variation practiced with the hands and elbows close together, increasing shoulder and core activation.
- ·Strengthens core and arms
- ·Improves posture
- ·Improves concentration
Instructions
- 1From a kneeling position, place the crown of your head on the mat and extend both arms straight alongside your torso, palms facing down.
- 2Engage the deep neck muscles and press the crown firmly into the mat to create a stable base without arm support.
- 3Tuck your toes, lift your hips, and walk your feet forward until your legs are as vertical as possible.
- 4Draw your core in firmly, then slowly lift one leg and then the other until both legs extend upright toward the ceiling.
- 5Keep your gaze soft and internal, maintaining full-body engagement through the soles of your feet.
- 6Hold for 5-10 breaths only, as this variation demands significant cervical strength.
- 7Lower both legs with control, rest in Child's Pose immediately, and do not repeat without rest.
Contraindications & precautions
- ⚠Any neck weakness, injury, or cervical pathology — this variation places maximum load on the cervical spine without arm support and should only be attempted by experienced practitioners with a strong neck.
- ⚠High blood pressure, glaucoma, or history of stroke — unassisted inversion of this intensity is not appropriate for any vascular or pressure-related condition.
- ⚠Osteoporosis of the cervical spine — reduced bone density at the neck makes compression in this pose a fracture risk.
