A twisting lunge where the torso rotates to bring the opposite elbow outside the front thigh, deepening the twist through the spine.
- ·Tones abdominal organs
- ·Strengthens legs
- ·Improves balance and stamina
Instructions
- 1Begin in a low lunge with the right foot forward, right knee over the right ankle, and the back left knee on the mat.
- 2Bring your hands to Anjali Mudra at the heart and lengthen the spine on an inhale.
- 3On an exhale, rotate your torso to the right, hooking the left elbow to the outside of the right thigh.
- 4Press the elbow and thigh against each other to deepen the twist, then extend the bottom arm toward the floor and the top arm toward the ceiling.
- 5Stack the shoulders and turn your gaze upward toward the raised hand, keeping the chest broad.
- 6Hold for 5 breaths, breathing into the ribcage to deepen the rotation, then release on an exhale and switch sides.
Contraindications & precautions
- ⚠Spinal disc herniation or acute back pain — twisting postures compress the intervertebral discs and should be avoided or practiced with minimal rotation.
- ⚠Digestive inflammation or abdominal surgery — the deep compression of the abdomen during the twist can aggravate healing tissue.
- ⚠Balance difficulties or inner ear conditions — keep the back knee on the mat rather than attempting the full standing variation.
