Instructions

  1. 1Begin in Warrior I with your right foot forward, back foot at 45 degrees, and hips squared toward the front of the mat.
  2. 2Interlace your fingers behind your back and press your palms together, drawing the shoulder blades gently toward each other.
  3. 3Inhale to open the chest and lift the sternum, then exhale and hinge forward from the hips, bringing your torso inside the right thigh.
  4. 4Allow the crown of your head to drop toward the mat while keeping the front knee bent directly over the ankle.
  5. 5Press the outer edge of the back foot firmly into the mat to maintain stability and protect the back knee.
  6. 6Hold for 5-8 breaths, then inhale to rise back up to Warrior I before switching sides.

Contraindications & precautions

  • High blood pressure or heart conditions — the inverted head position combined with an intense lunge can spike blood pressure; keep the head level or avoid the pose.
  • Shoulder impingement or rotator cuff injury — clasping the hands behind the back and lifting the arms creates compression in the shoulder joint.
  • Neck injury or cervical disc issues — letting the head hang in full inversion strains the cervical spine; keep a neutral neck instead.
