Half Moon Pose

Ardha Chandrasana

A challenging balancing pose where the body forms a half-moon shape, standing on one leg with the torso rotated open and the top arm reaching skyward.

  • ·Improves balance and coordination
  • ·Strengthens legs
  • ·Stretches the side body

Instructions

  1. 1Begin in Triangle Pose with your right foot forward, right hand resting on your shin or a block.
  2. 2Shift your weight onto your right foot and lift your left leg parallel to the floor.
  3. 3Stack your left hip directly over your right hip and rotate your torso open toward the ceiling.
  4. 4Extend your left arm straight up, fingertips reaching toward the sky.
  5. 5Fix your gaze on a steady point on the floor or, when stable, turn your eyes upward.
  6. 6Hold for 5 breaths, pressing firmly through your standing heel to maintain balance.
  7. 7To exit, lower your left leg slowly and return to Triangle Pose.

Contraindications & precautions

  • Headache or migraine — the open rotation and balance demand can intensify pressure; rest in a restorative pose instead.
  • Low blood pressure — the lateral extension and single-leg balance may cause dizziness; use a wall or block for support.
  • Hip or knee injury — avoid full weight-bearing on the affected side; modify by keeping the raised leg low or skipping the pose.
