Formidable Face Pose

Ganda Bherundasana

An advanced prone inversion and backbend where the chin and chest rest on the floor while the legs extend overhead, requiring exceptional spinal flexibility and shoulder strength.

  • ·Strengthens shoulders and arms
  • ·Builds core strength
  • ·Increases spinal flexibility

Instructions

  1. 1Sit in Staff Pose (Dandasana) with legs extended straight and spine tall, grounding through both sitting bones.
  2. 2Inhale and raise both arms overhead, lengthening the side body and broadening across the collarbones.
  3. 3Exhale and hinge at the hips, folding forward with a long flat back rather than rounding the spine first.
  4. 4Walk your hands past your feet and, if accessible, clasp each hand around the corresponding foot or ankle.
  5. 5On each exhale, draw your torso closer to your thighs and your forehead toward your shins, softening the hamstrings consciously.
  6. 6Hold for 8-15 breaths, breathing into the back body and relaxing the face, jaw, and neck completely.
  7. 7To release, inhale and lengthen the spine before slowly rising back to Dandasana with a straight back.

Contraindications & precautions

  • Hamstring or sciatic nerve injury — deep forward folding places maximum tensile load on the posterior chain and can worsen acute hamstring tears or sciatic inflammation.
  • Herniated lumbar disc — flexion under load compresses the disc anteriorly and can cause or aggravate nerve impingement; avoid without physiotherapy guidance.
  • Recent abdominal surgery or hernia — the abdominal compression created by folding deeply onto the thighs is contraindicated during recovery.
